D.U.M.B. Goals

Most of us have heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Bound. However, sometimes they can add more busy-ness and clutter to our lives without any real accomplishment. And many times we base them on the ‘shoulds’ that are imposed from societal expectations, and not from our inner ‘musts’, which hinder us from reaching outside our comfort zone and achieving our life’s dreams. Because of this, well, sometimes they can just be plain boring and unauthentic, which doesn’t motivate or inspire us for the long term.

Instead, sometimes we need to set some D.U.M.B. goals to spice up our lives and get unstuck. Sometimes we need goals that others might scoff at or say it isn’t realistic, and we can prove them wrong. And sometimes, we just need to dream big to feel alive.

And while achievable is necessary for goals… for example, a 5’2″, 42 year old woman, will never be an official NFL football player…. the other 4 rules can and should be broken from time to time.

So, if you’re in a rut, feel stuck, or just want more purpose in your life, then try setting some D.U.M.B. goals!

D.U.M.B. goals are:

Daring ~ Step outside the status quo. Buck the trends. Be authentic. Embrace Vulnerability. “Too many of us are not living our dreams, because we are living our fears.” – Les Brown

Uncomfortable ~ The route to happiness is not by avoiding unhappiness. We learn more from difficulty than from comfort. “You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” – Brian Tracy

Meaningful ~ Start something that matters. Make a difference. Make an impact. Change the World. “Don’t count the things you do, do the things that count.” – Zig Ziglar

Bold ~ “Freedom lies in being bold.” – Robert Frost

What are your D.U.M.B. goals?
